Online backup has been around for decades. In its crudest
form it involved simple, unprotected file transfer from
one location to another. At that point it was the forte
of large corporations and military who could use this
technology in conjunction with secure point to point
servers. Things have moved on very much and today online
backup has become the norm for most responsible organizations
regardless of their size. The reasons for this stem
from the fact that the technology has become far more
secure and reliable and usable bandwidth for even small
organizations has become the norm for most.
The purpose of this document is to provide information
about Irish online backup and given an understanding
of the above which applies to the emergence of online
backup everywhere we can now examine the Irish online
backup scene.
Irish online backup has emerged from the international,
corporate and military (mainly American) roots as detailed
above. There are some fundamental difference in its
current status and road map as laid out below.
The Irish economy has been very strong through the nineties
and early 21st century. This success lends itself to
small business being able to afford online backup and
the emergence of Irish companies willing to provide
it. This emergence of home grown Irish online backup
companies has also provided the possibility of local
support further increasing the uptake of the service.
On an international level Ireland has good broadband
infrastructure. The track record however is not great
when examined in conjunction with G.D.P and population.
A country as wealthy as Ireland and with such a small
population to service should have near complete budget
broadband availability. The governments claim that it
is available nationwide is not something that they should
get any credit for as many areas can only get satellite
broadband of the most expensive type. The reason given
for this is the remoteness of many users. This explanation
is not acceptable given we are such a small and wealthy
nation. In contrast, India which is vast and has many
areas remote from cities is managing impressive availability
despite a much lower per capita G.D.P.
It does have to be acknowledged however that the infrastructure
which is in place while limited in range is reliable.
As with Irish broadband infrastructure above, speed
is relatively good where available on cable. Once the
cable is in however, speed is out of government control
and will be provided aggressively by competing suppliers.
The current speed are good enough to provide stable
online backup but we should be aiming towards speeds
similar to those in France which are multiples of our
average speeds.
Ireland has an educated populace and this has led to
a strong uptake of productive new technologies. Irish
online backup is thriving more because of this than
for any other reason. An uneducated populace would be
far more likely to be slow on the uptake of online backup
leaving the market slow and associated advancement,
benefits and competition many years behind.
Data protection has become a very important area in
Irish business and non compliance is punishable by law.
This has been the case for some time but what is new
is data inspection and enforcement. The appointment
of data inspectorate, the provision of powers and amendments
to Irish and E.U. Law regarding online backup have meant
that non complying entities will suffer greatly if they
lose data with the double edge sword of trying to cope
without data and being prosecuted for same. Online backup
has filled the gap by being the only system which not
alone automatically and securely backs up your data
off site but also in itself brings compliance benefits.
In addition to Irish and European legislation which
applies to all businesses, many industries require compliance
to group principles for a company to retain membership
and be afforded the benefits and protection it provides.
This is the norm internationally in most financial and
legal organization and regulatory bodies and will in
time be applied to all regulated business.
The only real problem with Irish online backup is the
poor infrastructure in many locations. If you are fortunate
enough to have affordable, fast broadband in your area
you can expect your experience with online backup to
be better than it would be just about anywhere else
in the world.
What is left is your decision as to which provider to
use. Be careful choosing a provider not based in Ireland
for two important reasons.
- Irish law requires you to backup in Ireland. You
are entitled to backup outside Ireland also but you
should not need to pay on the double as most reputable
Irish online backup companies backup within and outside
Ireland.
- If you do find yourself in a data loss situation
you may need to have your online backup provider call
to your office. This would not be considered a very
unusual occurrence so make sure it is both possible
and affordable.
Backupanytime is the largest Irish online backup provider.
We are based in Ireland and backup in Ireland and depending
on your data backup package may backup elsewhere also.
We are available to take tech support calls for no charge
to backup clients. We are available to call out if so
required and to do so does not involve inordinate expense.
