Remote Backup Systems (RBS) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) full compatibility!

Rob Cosgrove, first “Who’s who in data” interviewee, very kindly informed Backupanytime in advance of the official release of RBackup version 10.1. So, whats the big deal? This release can run in Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).

What does this mean for Remote Backup Partners?
This provides a strong, very large and fully compatible storage partner for Online backup firms using RBS solutions. Does this mean that RBS partners will now simply become storage resellers for Amazon? Absolutely not. This compatibility has been achieved by RBS to offer more choice to RBS partners.

Established RBS partners are likely to continue dealing with chosen data centres but power and space issues may make this an attractive option.

RBS has been in business since 1985 (Yes that is quite a long time in what is considered by many to be a very recent technology) and were indeed the founders of online backup.
 
How does it work?
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) installs a complete RBS Server. By complete they mean exactly that. This provides Server OS (2003 server) ,SQL server and RBS server. The result is a fully operational RBS Server online and ready to use in less than 10 minutes. If this is way off an it takes 30 mins, wouldn’t it still be the smartest, out of the box online backup solution for online backup partners!
