Google browser! Chrome available today!

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Google have for some time been employing FireFox engineers. Indeed they have registered domain names which to many indicated
either Internet browser development or at the very least protection of potential Google browser names.

Now the cat is out of the bag. Google is launching an Internet browser. This obvious path for Google has taken many by
surprise and even created a certain amount of shock in the industry. The thrust of the development is that it be more
lightweight and faster than Internet explorer. In addition you can be fairly sure that it will work very well with Gmail,
Google docs and other Google applications.

The new browser is called Chrome. It is open source. The Beta launch will be broad (as if a Google Beta could be ran on a
small pilot scheme) and will include 100 countries.

Internet explorer currently accounts for 80% of the market. The only real competitor in the industry up to now (on a volume
basis) is FireFox which has enjoyed much success recently. A Google browser should really shake up the market and will be
an obvious “try” for even novice Internet users. The pervasiveness and trust associated with Google as a company should
ensure that the browser doesn’t just become well known but well used.

Oh, by the way you will be able to download it today! More here as it becomes available.
Does this clash with our current testing of IE8. Well yes but it is apt and will appropriately not be left on the back burner.

We will post the link to the Chrome browser download as soon as it becomes available. We will also test and appraise it over the coming days.

It would seem hard to believe on the face of it that hard drive quality could fall.

Mozilla - open in more than source.

Mozilla - open in more ways than one.
Mozilla has been in the news for many reasons recently.
Firstly they lanched the latest release of their browser, firefox. Next, that same
browser broke records for the number of downloads. Now however, the opensource framework
under which mozilla works appears to be spreading throughout the entire organisation.
You would expect that one area to remain closed about is security but no, Mozilla who has
for some years now battled with Microsoft over the security of Mozilla versus that of
internet explorer is now taking an open source approach to security.

Mozilla are tracking data such as vulnerabilities,
discovery times, disclosure dates, resolution turnaround periods and a host of other
security related data. This you might expect. What may surprise you is that they intend
to release that data (to the point of making it downloadable in spreadsheet format) so
outside experts can provide opinions. This level of availability of data for distribution
and name for critique surely shows a bullishness which is unusual even for an opensource
company of this size.

This confidence may be seen as a trick since Mozilla as an opensource company will be
aware that weathering the storm of critique is normally easier for open source business
as those prone to pen opinions often generally in favour of opensource. Mozilla however
are no flash in the pan with a history of survival in a compeditive market with alledged
anti-compeditive players and a recent download record breaker.
