ICANN backup online expansion claims with approval of new names
Monday, June 30th, 2008ICANN have announced the approval of recommendations which are expected to allow the release of a much wider name set than is currently available. Rumours have been abound for some time now but the story is backed up with preliminary detail release on the ICANN website.
Ammendments to the proposal are to take place leaving the recommendations, maturing over the coming months and culminating in the release of the final publication in the first quarter of 2009.
Dr Twomey of ICANN is quoted as saying, “It’s a massive increase in the ‘real estate’ of the Internet.”
Currently there are 21 top level domains (tlds’) such as .com, .org, .info, .biz and .tv.
This will accomadate self-selection of domain names and increase the relevance of domains to their users (at least that is the intention) with an obvious present successful example being .travel as used by the tourism sector. Current applications or at least intended applications awaiting the release of the new system include many regional, in particular city extensions as in .nyc, .dublin, .london etc.
ICANN do not sell domains. They are the global authority for tlds and are therefore an essential component of just about everything online.
The release will support multiple languages including characters specific to those dialects thus assisting with regional tld relevance.
The new domains could be available as early as the second quarter of 2009.
Further information is available from the ICANN website.
