| Is
online backup expensive?
The short answer is that online backup is expensive
when compared with inferior options. For example, making
a copy of data on a hard disk is far less expensive
than backing up the same quantity online. The differences
are as follows.
- You are still responsible for the hard drive. You
have therefore failed to outsource the most outsourcable
of critical I.T. tasks.
- Copying to a hard drive is a manual process. If
you forget to do it or do not have time you have no
backup.
- Your hard drive will fail. All hardware fails at
some stage.
We use significantly more than one data source. Even
if you didn't want the automation or to outsource the
responsibility, your spend on "due to die"
drives would far outweigh the perceived savings of a
D.I.Y. approach to data management.
Your data would not be encrypted. Any transportation
of the data off site (which would be required to protect
against office flood, fire, break in etc.) would incur
a risk of client confidentiality which no responsible
company could afford.
Your "system" would not be .D.P.A. compliant
and you would run the risk of data loss, fines, penalties
and terrible publicity.
Should you have an issue of any type, you would be
literally on your own. Data backup is strictly a non
recursive issue. The most expensive solutions come with
no guarantee after the fact.
